The word NGO simply means Non Government Organizations to us. We are aware that such organizations exist in quite a considerable number in India working on different social issues. And that is it. How many of us actually spare some moment to think how these NGOs in India are carrying on with their good work with very meagre help from Government? In fact, there are many NGO in India that are actually working very hard towards eradicating some of the major evils of the society like dowry system, mal-treatment of women, female foeticide and many such others.

There are also several NGOs which are doing very good work for street children, old people and oppressions against women, or for that matter even against domestic violence. Indeed, these NGOs are surviving because of some enthusiasts who are willing to use their knowledge, skills and experience of life to serve the society to which they belong. These are the people who dream of a blemish free society where all cross sections of people are happy in their own way and no one is wronged or exploited or even abused for that matter. It do sound completely Utopian to us but believe me it is this dream which drives so many volunteers at NGO and makes Indian NGOs work. AT the same time there are also many conscientious people who may not be of any help actively but they try to make some contribution of their own through money. An organization after all cannot run without money. And there are some big-shots of the society who makes monetary contributions like those of film personalities or business tycoons or may be sports personalities.

We all know that involvement of such big and wealthy names naturally means involvement of a lot of money. Now here comes the question of the only sole necessary evil in this whole system of NGO. Promise of a lot of money also brings in quite considerable number of fraudulent activities in this sphere. And the saddest part is now days there are many NGO for poor people who are exposed as being fraud by the police and investigators at different times. In such a scenario, it becomes very difficult for a commoner to determine a sincerely working NGO if they want to contribute by working for the society. Indeed the corrupt NGOs are coming up so many in numbers that we need to remain far away from them to be on the safer side. Hence after all I guess that it is not only our lack of appreciation that we do not know much about the NGOs in India but also a method of saving ourselves from potential harm's ways. May be a stringent governmental monitoring system regarding the functioning of NGOs would increase the level of participation on the part of the common people.
